City Proposes New Taxes in 2024 Due To $0 Tax Revenue From Crab

With the loss of associated taxes from crab processing, the revenue streams flowing into Saint Paul Island have been severely impacted by the closure of the crab fisheries for both the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons. The City will receive $0 crab tax revenue again in 2024, as it did in 2023.

On December 12, 2023, City Council adopted the City’s calendar year 2024 budget, reflecting deep budgetary cuts and layoffs. The Council also passed three ordinances proposing new taxes on alcohol, marijuana and tobacco products, rental of vehicles for non-residents, and long-term room rentals.

Mayor Merculief issued a letter to community members today explaining why the proposed new taxes are necessary to continue providing essential services, and how they are targeted primarily to visitors and tourists. This letter was mailed to all box holders. The Mayor urges community members to read his letter prior to the special election on January 12, 2024, when residents will vote on the proposed new taxes.
