Support Local Fishermen & the Halibut Defense Fund

Halibut defense fund

The Alaska Marine Conservation Council has joined a diverse coalition of organizations called the Halibut Defense Alliance to help defend Amendment 123 in court. The amendment, the Halibut Abundance-Based Management (ABM) action, regulates the amount of bycatch of halibut and other groundfish allowed by bottom trawling vessels in the Bering Sea.

Amendment 123 was adopted in December 2021 by 8 out of 11 Council seats of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), including the 6 Alaska representatives. The amendment and these efforts are supported by the Central Bering Sea Fishermen’s Association (CBSFA), the Tribe, the City of Saint Paul, and the State of Alaska and is important to protect local fishing grounds.
