The 2023 Pribilof Islands Wildlife Protection Guidelines for Oil Spill Response provides spill responders the tools and background information needed to address wildlife concerns during a spill response in the Pribilof Islands. The document additionally addresses the protection of wildlife from rats associated with grounded-vessel incidents and response-related vessels, and contains measures to help ensure that overall response activities are conducted in a manner that minimizes adverse effects to wildlife, such as the prevention of unnecessary or illegal disturbance to sensitive species and habitats. The document focuses on two principal wildlife resources – migratory birds and marine mammals – that are at risk during an oil spill on shore or in offshore and/or coastal waters or freshwater, because of their susceptibility and vulnerability to oiling and because of the importance of those species, both biologically and as a subsistence resource.
