Sales Tax

The main revenue for the City of Saint Paul is through the collection of local sales tax on all goods and services that are sold on St. Paul island, including the sale of seafood products.

Sale Tax Registration

All businesses conducting business on St. Paul Island are required per City ordinance to register their business annually. The City is now using MuniRevs for sales tax registration. Registration for sales tax is now completed online. Businesses must register by January 15th of every year. Click here to register your business with the City.

Tax Rate

The City’s current tax rate is 3.5% on the sale of all goods and services that are sold on St. Paul island.

Community Development Tax Incentive Program

The City developed a Community Development Tax Incentive Program for the purpose of encouraging seafood deliveries to St. Paul Island, or to future new business enterprises for the purpose of encouraging growth in that business, and opportunities for St. Paul Island. 

The tax incentive program for seafood reduced the tax rate by one and 1.5% for the following:

  • Bairdi:  All shares
  • St. Matthew Island Blue King:  All shares
  • Bristol Bay Red King Crab: B, C, CP and CDQ shares
  • Pribilof Red King Crab: B, C, CP and CDQ shares
  • Pribilof Blue King Crab: B, C, CP and CDQ shares
  • Opilio:  B, C, CP and CDQ shares

Remote Sellers Sales Tax

The City is a member of Alaska Remote Seller Sales Tax Commission. A Remote seller is a seller or marketplace facilitator making sales of goods or services delivered within the State of Alaska, without having a physical presence in a taxing jurisdiction, or conducting business between taxing jurisdictions, when sales are made by internet, mail order, phone or other remote means.

Reporting Sales Tax

Businesses are required to submit monthly sales tax returns along with payment by the 15th of the following month. The City is now using MuniRevs for sales tax reporting. Reporting of sales tax is now completed online. Click here to submit your monthly sales tax return.

Please note that late fees will be automatically calculated if payment of sales tax is after the 15th of each month.
